Academic Deferment

Students on Academic Notice will be placed on Academic Deferment in the following term if both the overall combined GPA is below 2.00 AND the term GPA is below 2.00. Institutional GPA will be considered before any student is deferred. If the Institutional GPA is at or above a 2.00, the student will remain on Academic Notice.

Students on Academic Deferment can apply for readmission only after the following minimum periods:

1. For the first Academic Deferment, one regular term (fall or spring)

2. For the second Academic Deferment, one calendar year

After a second Academic Deferment, a student may be ineligible for further enrollment at the University of Memphis.

Students on Academic Deferment who wish to return to the University of Memphis must submit their application for readmission to the Office of Undergraduate Admissions.  The Office of Undergraduate Admissions reviews and processes all readmission applications for returning students. Coursework completed at another accredited college or university may be considered by the Office of Undergraduate Admissions in determining eligibility for readmission.

Students readmitted after an Academic Deferment must complete an Academic Coaching Agreement, meet biweekly with an Academic Coaching Strategist, and follow all requirements established by Academic Coaching and Support Services. Students must meet with an Academic Coaching Strategist a minimum of 6 times throughout the semester.

Students looking to avoid sitting out the required time stated above must file an Academic Deferment Appeal before they will be granted an exception.
