Biography
Dipankar Dasgupta obtained his bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering in 1981 and his master’s degree in Computer Engineering in 1986 in India. He received his Ph.D. in Computer Science from the University of Strathclyde, Glasgow, in 1993. Before his Ph.D., he was teaching Computer Science in India as an Assistant Professor.
He was a postdoctoral researcher at the University of New Mexico from January 1994 until August 1995, working on an immune system based model for novelty detection in sensory data. He was a visiting faculty member at the University of Missouri St. Louis until December 1996.
Dipankar Dasgupta is a Professor of Computer Science at the University of Memphis since January 1997. He is a leading figure in the application of bio inspired and machine learning approaches to cyber defense. His groundbreaking works including Digital Immunity, Negative Authentication, Cloud Insurance Model, and Auth Spectrum have earned recognition in Computerworld Magazine and other media outlets. With over 300 publications including 4 patents, 23000+ citations, and an h index of 68 as per Google Scholar, he is featured on UCLA's list of prominent computer scientists. Dr. Dasgupta’s multidisciplinary research is highly acclaimed.
He has received numerous awards including the 2023 Presidential Award for Lifetime Achievement in Research, the 2012 Willard R. Sparks Eminent Faculty Award and the 2014 ACM SIGEVO Impact Award. Among other honors the Dunavant Professorship 2007 from the University’s College of Arts and Sciences, a 3-year award for exceptional teaching, scholarship, service, and outreach achievement; the College of Arts and Sciences Distinguished Research Award 2002 and 2006; the Sigma Xi Research Paper Award 2003; the Early Career Research Award 1999 and the Dr. Pat E. Burleson Professorship 2007.
Dr. Dasgupta’s research has been supported through several funding sources over the last 30 years. He has also received five Best Paper Awards in different international conferences and has been organizing the Symposium on Computational Intelligence in Cyber Security CICS at IEEE SSCI since 2007. Dr. Dasgupta is an IEEE Fellow, NAI Fellow, ACM Distinguished Speaker 2015 to 2020 and 2026 to 2028, IEEE Distinguished Lecturer 2022 to 2024, and NSF Fulbright Distinguished Scholar 2024. He regularly serves as a panelist and keynote speaker, offers tutorials in leading computer science conferences, and has given more than 350 invited talks at different universities and industries.
As the Founding Director of the Center for Information Assurance CfIA at the University of Memphis, he has played a key role in education, training, and outreach activities on AI based cybersecurity and information assurance since 2004.
