Trailblazing Through Challenges: Jasmine Williams' PhD Journey

In January 2021, a seasoned nurse manager began a new chapter at the University of
Memphis, stepping into the PhD in Nursing program with a clear goal—to shape the future
of nursing leadership and education. With years of clinical and management experience,
Jasmine brought a unique and valuable perspective to her academic work.
Midway through one of the program’s most demanding phases—the Preliminary Qualifying Exams—she and her family relocated to Virginia. Juggling boxes and books, theory and transitions, she persevered with grit, time management, and a strong support system.
Her research, inspired by real-world experience, focused on the onboarding of new nurse managers and the core competencies required for successful leadership. This work not only fueled her academic journey but also led to a faculty role at Galen College of Nursing before completing her dissertation.
Throughout the doctoral process, she built meaningful connections with peers, mentors, and professionals in the field, forming a network of support that enriched both her studies and her research.
From passing comprehensive exams to successfully defending her dissertation, each milestone was a celebration of resilience, purpose, and progress. Earning her PhD marked not just a personal triumph, but the launch of her next phase—educating future nurses and influencing leadership development across healthcare.
Now a theory, lab, and clinical professor, she continues to bridge research and practice, mentor aspiring leaders, and champion transformative education. Her journey is a powerful reminder that determination, heart, and vision can trailblaze paths that benefit generations to come.
