UofM School of Public Health Joins South Memphis Leaders to Address Crime and Blight Challenges

July 24, 2025 - Steve Shular, Community Outreach Representative for the University of Memphis (UofM) School of Public Health (SPH), attended the South Memphis Neighborhood Partnership meeting to support local efforts addressing critical public health concerns.

Neighborhood association leaders were joined by representatives from the Memphis Mayor’s Office, Memphis Police Department, Code Enforcement, and other government agencies to discuss strategies for reducing crime and blight—two key public health challenges in the South Memphis area.

During the meeting, Shular introduced Dr. Tony Lugemwa, Director of Community Relations and Research Initiatives at the Memphis Health Center, located at 360 East E.H. Crump Boulevard near downtown Memphis. Dr. Lugemwa is a proud graduate of the UofM School of Public Health.

The UofM SPH and the Memphis Health Center are collaborating to host a community health fair in South Memphis later this year.
