General Campus Safety Updates

Campus Safety & Security Enhancements
The University of Memphis Police Department (UMPD) continues to prioritize the safety and well-being of our students, faculty, and staff. Several recent upgrades and initiatives reflect our ongoing commitment to creating a secure campus environment:

  • Expanded Camera Coverage: As of July 2025, the University has made the decision to increase surveillance coverage by installing additional security cameras on the South Campus. This complements ongoing efforts to update and expand our camera network across all university grounds.
  • Tiger Patrol Program: Our Tiger Patrol initiative remains active and growing. The program is designed to ensure students and staff feel safe while on campus, particularly in parking lots and surrounding areas. Patrol visibility and engagement have increased as part of this effort.
  • Upgraded Dispatch Center: UMPD has completed a full renovation of our dispatch center. It is now equipped with top-of-the-line technology, enabling faster response times and improved communication capabilities.
  • K-9 Unit Addition: In February 2025, UMPD welcomed K-9 Pharaoh, a fully trained narcotics detection dog. Pharaoh plays a key role in assisting our officers in identifying and preventing illegal activity on campus.
  • Modern Equipment Deployment: Our department remains equipped with a range of modern tools to enhance campus safety. These include less-lethal tasers, drones, and officer-worn body cameras, all of which support responsible and effective policing practices.
UMPD is committed to transparency, innovation, and excellence in campus safety.

Safety & Grants

Dear Tiger Family,

Thanks to $18.2 million from 2023 through 2025 in grants awarded to our campus by the State, we are continuing to strengthen resources and further ensure that our campus community remains safe. Our University Crime Information Center (UCIC) is now fully operational. The UCIC is a technology-infused hub operating year-round to provide real-time data, enabling UofM Police Services to respond quickly and proactively to on-campus events and stop crime in its tracks.

Among the features of the UCIC are:

  • 24/7 monitoring.

  • Enhanced search capabilities, which allow for the ability to locate someone on campus by a description of what they are wearing.

  • Suspicious activity alerts, which visually flags/alerts when something is suspicious.

  • Virtual escorting, which allows for the ability to follow a person across the entire campus.

To begin the semester, we shared important tips for students, faculty and staff to remember regarding crime reduction. These include the three A’s:

  • Be Aware and vigilant of your surroundings.

  • Be Alert to suspicious people and vehicles. Remember you can remain anonymous when reporting suspicious activity.

  • Avoid situations you perceive as dangerous.

Additionally, we encourage the campus to continue securing all items out of plain view in your vehicle, follow general safety tips and continue to utilize campus safety resources, which can be found on the Police Services Webpage.
