Our Mission
The University of Memphis Institute on Disability (UMID) is leading communities in the mid-south and beyond toward a better understanding and value of all people through research, education and service for and about persons with disabilities, with an emphasis on persons with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
Our Vision
We intend to continue acting on our commitment to create a learning community that provides perspectives and insights from scholars, community partners, students, families and other supporters, who challenge, lead and advocate for (and with) persons with disabilities, to create a community of practice where all people are valued and equipped with the knowledge and resources to live a life with purpose.

We utilize a person-centered systems perspective to maximize education, health, social, familial, employment, and financial outcomes for our community members and those who support them in an ever-changing global environment.
We create and leverage innovative and interdisciplinary programs, services, and research with community partners to promote higher education access and career development. Along with our partners, we advocate for community integration and strive to enhance the overall quality of life for individuals with disabilities and their families.
Our practical, real-life results change individuals, families, and communities and will inform systemic and sustainable change.
