Join us for a thought-provoking lecture by Dr. Selina Makana (Dept. of History), who
will put her newly released book Beyond the Battlefield: Women and the Nation in Twentieth-Century Angola into a broader transnational context by mapping the journey of the women's rights agenda since the 4th World Conference
on Women in Beijing.
2025 marked the 30th anniversary of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action.
This document provided a pivotal blueprint for women’s and girls’ rights across the
globe. But, how far has the international community come in transforming the women’s
rights agenda? This year’s Women’s History series takes a reflective journey, from
a global South perspective, to understand how far women have come in creating a just
and better world for themselves in times of renewed cultures of war and militarism,
global economic disparities, and human rights abuses.
