Study Abroad

The Women’s and Gender Studies program wholeheartedly encourages undergraduate minors to complete part of their undergraduate coursework in the study of women, gender and sexuality through a UofM Study Abroad program. Your program abroad will introduce you to a new part of the world, a new culture, and new people! You will become more adaptable, a better problem solver, and a stronger intercultural communicator.

Studying women’s, gender, and sexuality studies in a foreign country will deepen your understanding of the field. You will be exposed to new cultural practices, ideologies, and movements that will help you develop a more global framework for understanding issues that affect women, families, and those in a wide range of communities. You will be exposed to diverse perspectives and narratives of experience that will help you build a more nuanced understanding of the world we all share.

You can study women’s and gender studies abroad for a few weeks, a few months, or even a full academic year. Despite what you may fear, done right, studying abroad can be affordable and does not slow your time to graduation. You can use your regular financial aid and scholarships; you can also apply for additional study abroad aid through UofM and outside agencies. If you plan with your academic advisor ahead of your trip, all the courses you take can count towards your degree requirements. And, you don't have to speak a foreign language to go abroad - though we encourage you to learn one! With over 350 program options, the Study Abroad Office can find the right program for you based on your academic interests! What are you waiting for?
